Chief Nephrology Resident 2023 – 2024

Dr. Emily Lauren Simms is the chief/lead UBC nephrology resident for the 2023-2024 academic year. Originally from Ottawa, Emily has made a habit of ‘moving west’. Embarking upon her academic journey at Carleton University in Liberal Arts, she completed a combined honours undergraduate degree in Biology and the Humanities. She studied the fundamental principles of existence to understand the meaning of it. After fell in love with renal medicine after discovering that nephrologists are both scientists and humanists that deploy expertise in the intricacies of kidney pathophysiology to allow patients to lead full and meaningful lives as nephrologists have the unique opportunity of caring for patients throughout their renal journey – from diagnosis to dialysis, and beyond. Every day, she is humbled by her patients’ resilience and learning what life means to them. After a year of travel through New Zealand and Australia, she stopped first in the Prairies and graduated from medical school at the University of Saskatchewan. There, she completed a Certificate of Global Health and Epidemiology that brought her to both Northern Saskatchewan and Vietnam. She then continued onto Calgary to complete her core Internal Medicine residency.
